Lip Augmentation
Shape before volume. Most unnatural lip results come from adding product without respecting the proportion between the upper and lower lip.

01 · Understanding the concern
Why patients consider this
Lips lose definition and volume with age, and some people have always wanted more shape than they were born with. The failure mode is well known and highly visible, which makes many people cautious about asking. Caution is appropriate; the answer is conservative treatment and assessment between sessions rather than avoidance.
02 · The procedure
What lip augmentation involves
Most lip augmentation uses hyaluronic acid filler placed in specific anatomical positions — the body of the lip, the vermilion border, or the philtral columns — depending on whether the aim is volume, definition or shape. Fat transfer is an option where a longer-lasting change is wanted. Treatment is built over sessions rather than delivered at once.
03 · Candidacy
Who may be considered
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. Suitability is decided by examination.
- Thin or asymmetric lips
- Loss of definition at the lip border with age
- Realistic expectations about proportion
- No active infection or cold sores at the treatment site
- Not pregnant or breastfeeding
What it can address
Concerns it is used for
- Lip volume
- Definition at the vermilion border
- Asymmetry between the two sides
- Upper-to-lower lip proportion
- Fine vertical lines around the mouth, in part

04 · Planning
Why the planning matters more than the technique
A natural result generally keeps the lower lip fuller than the upper. Chasing volume in the upper lip, or treating a lip that is already at its limit, produces the appearance everyone is trying to avoid. Sessions are spaced so the result can be assessed once swelling has settled.
05 · How it works
Step by step
- 01
Assessment
Lip proportion, border definition and surrounding anatomy assessed.
- 02
Planning
Target shape agreed, with the first session deliberately conservative.
- 03
Anaesthesia
Topical anaesthetic; most fillers also contain local anaesthetic.
- 04
Placement
Product placed in the planned anatomical positions.
- 05
Assessment
Shape checked with you before the appointment ends.
- 06
Review
Reassessment once swelling has settled, with further product only if needed.
06 · The procedure journey
Before, during and after
Before
Avoid blood-thinning supplements where advised. Tell the clinic about any history of cold sores.
During
A short clinic appointment. Discomfort is generally mild with topical anaesthetic.
After
Swelling and sometimes bruising for a few days. Lips look larger initially than they will settle to.
07 · Recovery
What recovery generally involves
Swelling peaks in the first day or two and settles over about a week. Normal activity resumes immediately, though exercise, heat and alcohol are avoided briefly.
Recovery times are general ranges. Your own timeline depends on the extent of treatment, your health and your work, and is given at consultation.
- Avoid heat, sauna and heavy exercise for 24 to 48 hours
- Do not massage the lips unless instructed
- Expect asymmetric swelling early
- Assess the result at two weeks, not two days
- Report unusual pain or colour change immediately
08 · Outcomes
What to expect from the result
Hyaluronic acid results typically last months rather than years and are maintained by repeat treatment. Fat transfer results depend on graft survival. Results vary and are not guaranteed.
09 · Safety
Risks and considerations
Risks include swelling, bruising, lumpiness, asymmetry, cold sore reactivation, and rarely vascular occlusion, which is a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment. Treatment by a qualified practitioner who can recognise and manage complications is the relevant safeguard.
No procedure is risk-free. A full, individual discussion of risk forms part of consent and takes place before any decision is made.
10 · The surgeon
Why Dr. Swikriti Raniwala
The surgeon who assesses you performs the procedure and reviews you afterwards. Surgical work takes place in accredited surgical facilities with board-certified anaesthesiologists, and you leave the consultation with the plan and the costs in writing.

Questions patients ask
Lip Augmentation: common questions
How long do lip fillers last?
Usually months rather than years, depending on the product and individual metabolism.
Will my lips look obviously done?
That depends on how much is placed and where. Conservative, staged treatment is the approach used here.
Is it painful?
Generally mild discomfort. Topical anaesthetic is used and most products contain local anaesthetic.
Can filler be dissolved?
Hyaluronic acid fillers can generally be dissolved with an enzyme if needed, which is one reason they are preferred for lips.
How soon can I go back to work?
The same day, although visible swelling for a few days is normal.
Is fat transfer better for lips?
It lasts longer for the portion that survives but is less adjustable. The choice is discussed at consultation.
