Breast Reduction
One of the few aesthetic operations that is frequently done for symptoms. Most patients come for the neck and shoulder pain, and find the proportion change matters just as much.

01 · Understanding the concern
Why patients consider this
Disproportionate breast volume causes a set of problems that are easy to dismiss from the outside: shoulder grooving from bra straps, upper back and neck pain, skin irritation in the fold, difficulty exercising, and limited clothing options. These are physical complaints, not vanity ones, and they generally do not improve with weight loss alone.
02 · The procedure
What breast reduction involves
Breast reduction removes breast tissue, skin and fat, repositions the nipple-areola complex on its blood supply, and reshapes the remaining tissue into a smaller, higher breast. The scar pattern depends on how much is removed: commonly around the areola and vertically down to the fold, sometimes with an additional horizontal component in the fold for larger reductions.
03 · Candidacy
Who may be considered
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. Suitability is decided by examination.
- Symptoms attributable to breast weight
- Breast development complete and volume stable
- Stable weight
- Non-smokers or able to stop as advised, since smoking significantly affects healing here
- Understanding of the scar pattern involved
What it can address
Concerns it is used for
- Neck, shoulder and upper back discomfort
- Shoulder grooving from straps
- Skin irritation under the breast
- Difficulty with exercise and clothing
- Breast asymmetry
- Nipple position

04 · Planning
Why the planning matters more than the technique
Scars are the honest cost of this operation and they are not small. In exchange, most patients report substantial symptom relief. The plan sets out the expected scar pattern with you before surgery, including what changes if more tissue needs removing than anticipated.
05 · How it works
Step by step
- 01
Assessment
Symptoms, measurements, skin quality and nipple position recorded.
- 02
Planning
Scar pattern and target proportion agreed and marked.
- 03
Tissue removal
Excess tissue, fat and skin removed with the nipple kept on its blood supply.
- 04
Reshaping
Remaining tissue reshaped and the nipple-areola complex repositioned.
- 05
Closure
Layered closure with attention to fold position and symmetry.
- 06
Support
Surgical bra and scheduled reviews.
06 · The procedure journey
Before, during and after
Before
Investigations, breast imaging where indicated, anaesthetic assessment and stopping smoking for the period advised.
During
General anaesthetic, usually with an overnight stay.
After
Swelling, bruising and restricted arm movement. A surgical bra is worn continuously as instructed.
07 · Recovery
What recovery generally involves
Symptom relief is often noticed early, sometimes immediately. Desk work commonly resumes at around two weeks. Upper-body exercise is restricted for several weeks. Swelling settles over months and scars mature over a year or more, initially looking worse before they improve.
Recovery times are general ranges. Your own timeline depends on the extent of treatment, your health and your work, and is given at consultation.
- Wear the surgical bra for the full period advised
- No overhead or chest work until cleared
- Begin scar care only once cleared to do so
- Expect altered nipple sensation which may take months to settle
- Attend reviews so healing at the closure junction can be checked
08 · Outcomes
What to expect from the result
A smaller, better-supported breast with improved proportion, and for most patients meaningful symptom relief. Scars are permanent. Weight change, pregnancy and ageing continue to affect the breast. Results vary and are not guaranteed.
09 · Safety
Risks and considerations
Risks include delayed wound healing particularly at the junction of the scars, altered or lost nipple sensation, partial or rarely complete loss of the nipple-areola complex, asymmetry, and effects on breastfeeding. Smoking substantially increases the risk of healing complications in this operation.
No procedure is risk-free. A full, individual discussion of risk forms part of consent and takes place before any decision is made.

Questions patients ask
Breast Reduction: common questions
Will breast reduction relieve my back pain?
Many patients report substantial improvement in neck, shoulder and back symptoms, though outcomes vary and other causes of back pain may coexist.
How large are the scars?
The pattern depends on how much tissue is removed and is agreed before surgery. Scars are permanent but generally settle over a year.
Can I breastfeed afterwards?
Some women can, but it cannot be guaranteed. Tell the surgeon before surgery if future feeding is important to you.
Will the breasts get bigger again?
Significant weight gain or pregnancy can increase volume again. Otherwise the reduction is durable.
Is it covered by insurance?
Sometimes, where symptoms are documented and policy criteria are met. The clinic can provide documentation but insurers decide.
Will my nipple sensation change?
Altered sensation is common early. It often improves over months, but permanent change is possible.
