FUE Hair Transplant
Follicular units removed one at a time from the donor area, leaving small round marks instead of a line. The technique most people mean when they say they want a transplant with no visible scar.

01 · Understanding the concern
Why patients consider this
Many people rule out a hair transplant because of what they imagine the donor area will look like afterwards. FUE addresses that directly: instead of removing a strip of scalp, individual follicular units are extracted through tiny circular punches. The trade-off is time, cost per graft and a donor area that must be harvested evenly to avoid a moth-eaten look.
02 · The procedure
What fue hair transplant involves
A small punch, typically under a millimetre, is used to score around each follicular unit, which is then lifted out. Extraction is spread across the safe donor zone so density is reduced evenly rather than in patches. The grafts are sorted and placed into recipient sites in the same way as any transplant. The donor sites heal as small dots that are generally not visible at short hair lengths, though they are not invisible at a shaved scalp.
03 · Candidacy
Who may be considered
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. Suitability is decided by examination.
- Anyone who wants to keep the option of very short hair at the back and sides
- Smaller to moderate sessions, or top-up work after previous surgery
- People with good donor density spread across the scalp
- Patients who want to avoid a linear scar
- Beard or body hair harvesting in selected cases
What it can address
Concerns it is used for
- Frontal hairline recession
- Temple points
- Crown thinning
- Camouflage of previous strip scars
- Beard and eyebrow restoration in selected cases

04 · Planning
Why the planning matters more than the technique
FUE tempts people into asking for very large numbers in a single day. Over-harvesting a donor area cannot be undone. Planning sets a session size the donor zone can sustain, and reserves capacity for the loss that has not happened yet.
05 · How it works
Step by step
- 01
Donor preparation
The donor zone is marked and trimmed. Extraction is planned across the whole safe area, not concentrated in one band.
- 02
Extraction
Follicular units are scored and lifted individually, then held in controlled conditions.
- 03
Sorting
Grafts are separated by hair count so single-hair units can be placed at the leading edge of the hairline.
- 04
Site creation
Recipient sites are made at matched angle, direction and density.
- 05
Placement
Grafts are placed zone by zone, finest units first.
- 06
Aftercare briefing
Written instructions, washing demonstration and a scheduled review.
06 · The procedure journey
Before, during and after
Before
Trimming of the donor area, medical clearance, and instructions on medication and alcohol beforehand.
During
Local anaesthetic, several hours depending on graft numbers, with breaks. No general anaesthetic for routine cases.
After
Small crusts over the recipient area and pinpoint scabs in the donor zone, both of which settle over the following week to ten days.
07 · Recovery
What recovery generally involves
Donor discomfort is usually milder than with strip harvesting and most people manage with simple analgesia. Desk work is commonly resumed within a few days to a week. The donor marks fade over several weeks. Shedding of transplanted hair in the first month is normal; regrowth follows over the following months.
Recovery times are general ranges. Your own timeline depends on the extent of treatment, your health and your work, and is given at consultation.
- Keep the donor area clean and covered as instructed
- No caps that grip the recipient area until cleared
- No gym or swimming until advised
- Expect pinpoint redness in the donor zone for a few weeks
08 · Outcomes
What to expect from the result
FUE and FUT produce comparable growth when performed well; the difference is in donor management and scarring, not in the transplanted hair itself. Results build over months and vary between individuals.
09 · Safety
Risks and considerations
Risks include infection, folliculitis, over-harvesting of the donor area if session sizes are pushed, transection of follicles during extraction, temporary numbness and shock loss. Punch size, extraction pattern and session limits are the main safeguards, and they are discussed before you consent.
No procedure is risk-free. A full, individual discussion of risk forms part of consent and takes place before any decision is made.
10 · The surgeon
Why Dr. Swikriti Raniwala
The surgeon who assesses you performs the procedure and reviews you afterwards. Surgical work takes place in accredited surgical facilities with board-certified anaesthesiologists, and you leave the consultation with the plan and the costs in writing.

Questions patients ask
FUE Hair Transplant: common questions
Does FUE really leave no scar?
It leaves many small round scars rather than one line. At normal short hair lengths these are generally not noticeable, but a completely shaved scalp may show them.
Is FUE better than FUT?
Neither is better in the abstract. FUE suits people who want very short hair or smaller sessions; FUT can yield more grafts in a single session from a limited donor area. The comparison for your scalp is made at consultation.
How long does an FUE session take?
Commonly most of a day for larger sessions. Exact time depends on graft numbers.
Can beard hair be used?
In selected cases beard or body hair can supplement scalp donor supply, usually for density rather than hairline work.
When can I shave my head again?
Not until healing is complete and you have been cleared. Even then, a fully shaved scalp may show donor dots.
How soon can I fly?
Many patients travel back within a few days, but confirm timing at consultation, particularly for long-haul travel.
