Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
Where liposuction removes fat, abdominoplasty removes skin and repairs the abdominal wall. It is the answer when the problem is laxity rather than volume.

01 · Understanding the concern
Why patients consider this
After pregnancy or significant weight loss, the abdomen often has three separate problems at once: excess skin, separation of the abdominal muscles, and residual fat. Exercise addresses none of the first two. Skin that has been stretched beyond its recoil does not tighten, and separated rectus muscles do not come back together on their own, which is why the abdomen still protrudes in someone who is otherwise lean.
02 · The procedure
What tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) involves
A full abdominoplasty removes the excess skin between the navel and the pubic area, repairs separated abdominal muscles with internal sutures, and redrapes the remaining skin. The navel is repositioned through the new skin. A mini abdominoplasty treats laxity below the navel only, with a shorter scar and no navel repositioning, and suits a much smaller group of patients than usually assume they qualify.
03 · Candidacy
Who may be considered
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. Suitability is decided by examination.
- Excess abdominal skin that does not respond to exercise
- Rectus separation confirmed on examination
- Stable weight, with family planning complete where relevant
- Non-smokers or able to stop for the period advised
- Able to take adequate recovery time
What it can address
Concerns it is used for
- Loose or hanging abdominal skin
- Separation of the abdominal muscles
- Lower abdominal bulge that persists at a stable weight
- Caesarean scar overhang
- Stretch-marked skin below the navel, which is removed with the skin

04 · Planning
Why the planning matters more than the technique
The scar is the trade-off and it is permanent. It is placed low so it sits within underwear, but its length depends on how much skin needs to come out. Deciding between a full and a mini procedure on the basis of scar length rather than anatomy produces a poor result, so the assessment governs the choice.
05 · How it works
Step by step
- 01
Assessment
Examination for skin excess, muscle separation and fat distribution, standing and lying.
- 02
Marking
Incision position marked with you standing and with underwear in place.
- 03
Skin elevation
The abdominal skin is elevated to expose the muscle layer.
- 04
Muscle repair
Separated rectus muscles are brought together with internal sutures.
- 05
Skin removal and redraping
Excess skin is removed, the navel repositioned and the skin closed.
- 06
Drains and garment
Drains where used, and an abdominal binder fitted.
06 · The procedure journey
Before, during and after
Before
Anaesthetic assessment, investigations, stopping smoking as advised, and practical arrangements for two weeks of restricted activity.
During
General anaesthetic, usually with an overnight or short inpatient stay.
After
You will be positioned slightly flexed at first. Expect tightness, drains where used, and an abdominal binder.
07 · Recovery
What recovery generally involves
This is a bigger recovery than most people expect. Walking starts the same or next day, but bent slightly forward at first. Desk work is commonly resumed at two to three weeks; physical work and exercise considerably later. Muscle repair means core training is restricted for a prolonged period. Swelling settles over months and the scar matures over a year or more.
Recovery times are general ranges. Your own timeline depends on the extent of treatment, your health and your work, and is given at consultation.
- No lifting, including children, for the period specified
- Sleep flexed for the first days as instructed
- Wear the binder as directed
- Scar care begins only once the wound has healed and you are cleared
- Expect numbness across the lower abdomen, which improves slowly
08 · Outcomes
What to expect from the result
A flatter abdominal contour with a repaired muscle layer and a permanent low scar. Future pregnancy or significant weight change can undo the repair. Results vary between individuals and are not guaranteed.
09 · Safety
Risks and considerations
Risks include bleeding, infection, seroma, delayed wound healing particularly at the centre of the closure, altered sensation, scar widening, and venous thromboembolism, which is why early mobilisation and prophylaxis are taken seriously. Smoking materially increases wound healing risk. Full discussion takes place at consultation.
No procedure is risk-free. A full, individual discussion of risk forms part of consent and takes place before any decision is made.
10 · The surgeon
Why Dr. Swikriti Raniwala
The surgeon who assesses you performs the procedure and reviews you afterwards. Surgical work takes place in accredited surgical facilities with board-certified anaesthesiologists, and you leave the consultation with the plan and the costs in writing.

Questions patients ask
Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty): common questions
What is the difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction?
Liposuction removes fat. Abdominoplasty removes skin and repairs muscle. Many patients need one, some need both, and examination determines which.
Will the scar be visible?
There is a permanent scar, placed low so it generally sits within underwear or swimwear. Length depends on how much skin is removed.
Can I have children afterwards?
It is generally advised to complete your family first, since pregnancy can stretch the repaired muscle layer again.
How long until I can exercise?
Walking is early; core and heavy training are restricted for a prolonged period after muscle repair. Specific timings are given in your aftercare.
Do I need a full or a mini tummy tuck?
A mini procedure only treats laxity below the navel and suits fewer patients than expect it. Examination decides.
Will stretch marks be removed?
Those on the skin that is removed go with it. Stretch marks above the navel generally remain.
