FUT Hair Transplant
A strip of donor scalp is removed and dissected into individual follicular units under magnification. Less fashionable than FUE, and still the better choice for some scalps.

01 · Understanding the concern
Why patients consider this
FUT is often dismissed because of the scar. That is a fair concern and worth discussing honestly: it leaves a fine line across the back of the scalp, which is hidden at most hair lengths but visible if the head is shaved. What it offers in exchange is graft yield. For a large area of loss and a limited donor zone, a single strip session can supply more usable follicular units than an equivalent FUE session.
02 · The procedure
What fut hair transplant involves
A narrow strip of scalp is taken from the mid-occipital donor area, chosen for density and permanence. The wound is closed, often with a trichophytic technique that encourages hair to grow through the line. The strip is then dissected under microscopes into individual follicular units, which are placed into recipient sites in the usual way. Because dissection happens under direct vision, follicle damage during harvesting is generally low.
03 · Candidacy
Who may be considered
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. Suitability is decided by examination.
- Larger areas of loss where graft yield matters more than donor-area appearance at zero length
- Patients who keep their hair long enough to cover the donor line
- Scalps where donor density is concentrated rather than spread
- People who have already had FUE and have limited remaining scattered donor supply
What it can address
Concerns it is used for
- Extensive frontal and mid-scalp loss
- Crown coverage where large numbers are needed
- Cases needing maximum yield in one session

04 · Planning
Why the planning matters more than the technique
Strip width and placement decide how the scar behaves. Taking too wide a strip increases tension and widens the line. Planning takes scalp laxity into account and, where the area is large, may propose two sessions rather than one aggressive harvest.
05 · How it works
Step by step
- 01
Donor assessment
Scalp laxity and density determine the strip dimensions that are safe for you.
- 02
Harvest
The strip is removed from the permanent donor zone under local anaesthetic.
- 03
Closure
The wound is closed, commonly with a trichophytic edge so hair grows through the line.
- 04
Microscopic dissection
The strip is divided into individual follicular units under magnification by the technical team.
- 05
Site creation and placement
Recipient sites are made at matched angle and density, then grafts are placed.
- 06
Suture or staple removal
Arranged at the scheduled follow-up.
06 · The procedure journey
Before, during and after
Before
Medical clearance, photographs, and instructions on medication. The donor area is usually not shaved, which some patients prefer.
During
Local anaesthetic. The harvest itself is quick; dissection and placement account for most of the day.
After
A dressing over the donor line, tightness at the back of the scalp, and crusting in the recipient area for several days.
07 · Recovery
What recovery generally involves
Tightness and soreness at the donor line are more noticeable than with FUE for the first few days. Sutures or staples are removed at the review appointment. Most people return to desk work within a week to ten days. Transplanted hair sheds and regrows on the same timeline as any transplant.
Recovery times are general ranges. Your own timeline depends on the extent of treatment, your health and your work, and is given at consultation.
- Avoid stretching or heavy lifting early, which puts tension on the closure
- Keep the donor line dry as instructed before the first wash
- Return for suture or staple removal as scheduled
- Expect numbness above the donor line for some weeks
08 · Outcomes
What to expect from the result
Growth from strip-harvested grafts is comparable to FUE when dissection and placement are done well. The donor line matures over months and typically settles as a fine, pale line.
09 · Safety
Risks and considerations
Risks include wound tension and scar widening, temporary or occasionally persistent numbness above the donor line, infection, and shock loss. Scalp laxity assessment and conservative strip width are the main safeguards.
No procedure is risk-free. A full, individual discussion of risk forms part of consent and takes place before any decision is made.
10 · The surgeon
Why Dr. Swikriti Raniwala
The surgeon who assesses you performs the procedure and reviews you afterwards. Surgical work takes place in accredited surgical facilities with board-certified anaesthesiologists, and you leave the consultation with the plan and the costs in writing.

Questions patients ask
FUT Hair Transplant: common questions
How visible is the FUT scar?
Usually a fine line hidden at short-to-medium hair lengths, but visible on a shaved scalp. How it settles depends on scalp laxity, strip width and healing.
Can I have FUE later if I have had FUT?
Often yes. Many patients combine the two over time. The reverse is also possible.
Why choose FUT at all?
Graft yield from a limited donor area, and no need to shave the donor region. For extensive loss this can be decisive.
Is the procedure more painful than FUE?
Donor discomfort is generally greater for the first few days. The recipient area behaves the same way.
When are stitches removed?
At the scheduled post-operative review, with timing confirmed in your aftercare instructions.
Does FUT damage more follicles?
Not inherently. Dissection under magnification is performed under direct vision, which protects follicles during preparation.
