Hair Loss Treatment
Before anyone discusses grafts, it is worth knowing why the hair is going. Some causes reverse. Some do not. The two are managed very differently.

01 · Understanding the concern
Why patients consider this
Hair shedding is not a diagnosis. It can follow illness, pregnancy, sudden weight loss, thyroid disease, iron deficiency or stress, in which case it often recovers with the underlying cause treated. It can also be pattern hair loss, which is progressive and needs ongoing management. Treating the second as though it were the first wastes years, and treating the first with surgery is unnecessary.
02 · The procedure
What hair loss treatment involves
Assessment covers pattern, duration, family history, medical history and relevant blood investigations. Treatment is then matched to the finding. Medical therapy aims to slow or stabilise pattern loss and is the foundation of most plans. PRP and low-level laser therapy are used as adjuncts where indicated. Surgery is considered where loss is established and donor supply allows.
03 · Candidacy
Who may be considered
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. Suitability is decided by examination.
- Recent increase in shedding without an obvious cause
- Gradual widening of the parting or thinning at the temples
- Hair loss after illness, childbirth or significant weight change
- Anyone considering a transplant who has not yet had the underlying loss assessed
What it can address
Concerns it is used for
- Pattern hair loss in men and women
- Telogen shedding following illness or stress
- Thinning associated with nutritional or thyroid issues, alongside medical management
- Protecting existing hair before or after a transplant

04 · Planning
Why the planning matters more than the technique
Hair treatment is judged over months, not weeks, and needs a baseline. Photographs and, where useful, density measurements are taken at the start so progress is assessed against evidence rather than impression.
05 · How it works
Step by step
- 01
History and examination
Pattern, duration, family history and scalp examination.
- 02
Investigation
Blood tests where indicated, to identify reversible contributors.
- 03
Medical plan
Treatment matched to diagnosis, with the expected timeline explained.
- 04
Adjuncts
PRP or laser therapy where they add something to the plan.
- 05
Review
Reassessment at set intervals against baseline photographs.
- 06
Surgical discussion
Considered once loss is stable or medically controlled.
06 · The procedure journey
Before, during and after
Before
Stop nothing before your appointment unless told to. Bring a list of current medications and any recent blood reports.
During
Consultation and examination, with investigations arranged as needed. Non-surgical treatments are performed in clinic.
After
Most non-surgical options have no downtime. PRP may leave tenderness for a day.
07 · Recovery
What recovery generally involves
Medical treatment requires consistency rather than recovery. Shedding sometimes increases briefly at the start of treatment, which is expected and not a reason to stop without discussing it.
Recovery times are general ranges. Your own timeline depends on the extent of treatment, your health and your work, and is given at consultation.
- Continue treatment for the agreed period before judging it
- Keep the review appointments
- Report side effects rather than stopping quietly
- Expect to reassess at three to six months, not three weeks
08 · Outcomes
What to expect from the result
Medical treatment aims to stabilise loss and, in some cases, improve density. It does not restore hair in areas that have been bald for years. Response varies and cannot be guaranteed.
09 · Safety
Risks and considerations
Medical therapies for hair loss have recognised side effect profiles, some of which matter more for women of childbearing age or for men with specific concerns. These are discussed individually before anything is prescribed.
No procedure is risk-free. A full, individual discussion of risk forms part of consent and takes place before any decision is made.

Questions patients ask
Hair Loss Treatment: common questions
Can hair loss be reversed?
Some causes are reversible, particularly shedding after illness, pregnancy or deficiency. Pattern hair loss is progressive and is managed rather than cured.
How long before I see a change?
Most treatments are judged at three to six months against baseline photographs. Earlier assessment is usually not meaningful.
Is PRP worth doing?
It is used as an adjunct in selected cases, not as a replacement for medical treatment or surgery. Whether it suits your pattern is discussed at consultation.
Do I need treatment if I am having a transplant?
Usually yes. Surgery does not stop the loss of untransplanted hair, and protecting it is what keeps the result looking natural.
Is female hair loss treated differently?
Often, yes. The pattern, the investigations and the medication options differ, which is why assessment matters.
What should I bring to the first appointment?
Recent blood reports if you have them, a list of medications, and photographs of your hair from a year or two ago if available.
