Mommy Makeover
Not a single operation but a combination, planned around what pregnancy actually changed. Sometimes done together, sometimes better staged.

01 · Understanding the concern
Why patients consider this
Pregnancy and breastfeeding change the abdomen and the breasts in ways that are not related to weight. The abdominal muscles separate, skin stretches, and breast volume and position change after feeding stops. Many women return to their pre-pregnancy weight and find the shape has not returned with it, which is a different problem from the one the gym solves.
02 · The procedure
What mommy makeover involves
A mommy makeover combines procedures selected for your anatomy. Most commonly that means abdominoplasty with muscle repair, some form of breast surgery — lift, reduction or augmentation depending on what has changed — and liposuction to the flanks. The components are chosen at consultation. Combining them means one anaesthetic and one recovery, but it also means a longer operation, which is why some plans are deliberately staged.
03 · Candidacy
Who may be considered
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. Suitability is decided by examination.
- Family complete, or at least no pregnancy planned in the near term
- Stable weight for a reasonable period
- Finished breastfeeding for the interval advised
- Realistic about a substantial combined recovery with young children at home
- Practical support available for several weeks
- Medically fit for a longer anaesthetic
What it can address
Concerns it is used for
- Abdominal skin laxity and muscle separation
- Loss of breast volume or position after feeding
- Flank and waist contour
- Caesarean scar overhang

04 · Planning
Why the planning matters more than the technique
The honest conversation is about operating time and help at home. A very long combined procedure carries more risk than two shorter ones, and recovery with a toddler is harder than most people plan for. Where a combination is not sensible, staging is recommended even though it is less convenient.
05 · How it works
Step by step
- 01
Assessment
Examination of abdomen and breasts, with the components of the plan agreed individually.
- 02
Staging decision
Whether to combine or stage, based on total operating time and your circumstances.
- 03
Surgery
The agreed procedures performed under one anaesthetic where combined.
- 04
Inpatient care
Overnight or short inpatient stay with monitoring and early mobilisation.
- 05
Structured recovery
Garments, activity restrictions and scheduled reviews.
- 06
Long-term review
Scar and contour assessed over the following year.
06 · The procedure journey
Before, during and after
Before
Full anaesthetic workup, investigations, stopping smoking as advised, and genuine arrangements for childcare and household help.
During
General anaesthetic. Duration depends on the combination agreed. Inpatient stay is usual.
After
Expect tightness, drains where used, compression garments, and limited use of the arms and core simultaneously.
07 · Recovery
What recovery generally involves
This is the most demanding recovery of the body procedures offered, because it combines two recoveries. Lifting restrictions apply to children as much as to weights, which is the part that catches most patients out. Desk work commonly resumes at three weeks or later; full activity considerably after that. Swelling and scar maturation continue for a year.
Recovery times are general ranges. Your own timeline depends on the extent of treatment, your health and your work, and is given at consultation.
- Arrange help for lifting and childcare before surgery, not after
- Follow garment instructions for both abdomen and chest
- No core or upper-body training until cleared
- Expect fatigue for several weeks
- Attend all scheduled reviews
08 · Outcomes
What to expect from the result
Improvement in abdominal contour, muscle support and breast position or volume, with permanent scars in the agreed positions. A future pregnancy can reverse abdominal repair. Results vary and are not guaranteed.
09 · Safety
Risks and considerations
Combining procedures increases anaesthetic time, which increases the risk of thromboembolism and wound healing problems. Those risks are why the staging discussion is taken seriously and why some patients are advised against a single-stage combination. Individual risk is assessed at consultation.
No procedure is risk-free. A full, individual discussion of risk forms part of consent and takes place before any decision is made.

Questions patients ask
Mommy Makeover: common questions
How long after childbirth can I have surgery?
Generally once you have finished breastfeeding, your weight has been stable for a period and you feel physically recovered. Specific timing is agreed at consultation.
Can everything be done in one operation?
Sometimes. Total operating time and your medical profile decide. Where a combination would be too long, staging is recommended.
How much help will I need at home?
More than most people plan for. Lifting restrictions include children, for several weeks.
Will I be able to breastfeed after breast surgery?
It depends on the procedure performed. Raise it at consultation if future feeding matters to you.
What if I have another child later?
Pregnancy can stretch the abdominal repair again, which is why completing your family first is advised.
Is the recovery worse than a single procedure?
Yes. It combines the restrictions of each component, which is the main thing to plan around.
