Laser Skin Resurfacing
Controlled injury used to trigger repair. In deeper skin tones, the setting matters far more than the machine.

01 · Understanding the concern
Why patients consider this
Texture problems — acne scarring, enlarged pores, fine lines, sun damage — sit in the dermis and do not respond meaningfully to topical treatment. Resurfacing works by creating controlled zones of injury that stimulate collagen remodelling as they heal. The risk in pigmented skin is that the same injury provokes pigmentation, which is why settings and intervals are conservative.
02 · The procedure
What laser skin resurfacing involves
Fractional laser treats a fraction of the skin surface in microscopic columns, leaving untreated skin between them to speed healing. Ablative settings remove tissue; non-ablative settings heat without removing it. Treatment is delivered as a course, with intervals allowing the skin to recover and remodel between sessions.
03 · Candidacy
Who may be considered
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. Suitability is decided by examination.
- Acne scarring or textural irregularity
- Sun damage and fine lines
- Enlarged pores
- Skin assessed and primed for laser, particularly in deeper phototypes
- No recent isotretinoin, active infection or recent sun exposure
What it can address
Concerns it is used for
- Acne scarring
- Fine lines and crepiness
- Skin texture and pore appearance
- Sun damage
- Some surgical and injury scars

04 · Planning
Why the planning matters more than the technique
Fitzpatrick type determines settings, intervals and priming. Aggressive parameters that suit lighter skin produce pigmentation in deeper phototypes, so treatment here is planned as more sessions at lower intensity rather than fewer at higher.
05 · How it works
Step by step
- 01
Assessment
Skin type, concern and pigmentation history assessed.
- 02
Priming
Topical preparation for a period before treatment where indicated.
- 03
Test patch
Used where pigmentation risk warrants it.
- 04
Treatment
Laser applied under topical anaesthetic, in a planned pattern.
- 05
Healing phase
Redness and swelling for days, with structured aftercare.
- 06
Course and review
Sessions repeated at intervals with reassessment between.
06 · The procedure journey
Before, during and after
Before
Priming regime as prescribed, strict sun avoidance, and stopping retinoids and actives as instructed.
During
Topical anaesthetic is applied beforehand. Treatment feels hot and prickling; sessions are typically under an hour including preparation.
After
Redness, swelling and a sandpaper texture for several days, followed by fine flaking.
07 · Recovery
What recovery generally involves
Ablative treatment involves several days of visible redness and peeling; non-ablative settings are milder. Sun protection is mandatory throughout the course and for months afterwards. Collagen remodelling continues for months, so results build after the course has finished.
Recovery times are general ranges. Your own timeline depends on the extent of treatment, your health and your work, and is given at consultation.
- Broad-spectrum sun protection daily, without exception
- Barrier repair and gentle cleansing as prescribed
- No picking, scrubbing or actives until cleared
- Keep to session intervals
- Expect improvement to continue for months after the last session
08 · Outcomes
What to expect from the result
Improvement in texture, scarring and tone over a course, with continued remodelling afterwards. Scarring is improved rather than erased. Results vary and are not guaranteed.
09 · Safety
Risks and considerations
Risks include post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, prolonged redness, infection including cold sore reactivation, and rarely scarring. Deeper skin tones require conservative settings and adequate intervals, which is a clinical decision rather than a preference.
No procedure is risk-free. A full, individual discussion of risk forms part of consent and takes place before any decision is made.
10 · The surgeon
Why Dr. Swikriti Raniwala
The surgeon who assesses you performs the procedure and reviews you afterwards. Surgical work takes place in accredited surgical facilities with board-certified anaesthesiologists, and you leave the consultation with the plan and the costs in writing.

Questions patients ask
Laser Skin Resurfacing: common questions
Is laser resurfacing safe for Indian skin?
Yes, with appropriate settings, priming and intervals. The main risk is post-inflammatory pigmentation, which conservative parameters are designed to avoid.
How many sessions are needed?
Usually a course spaced weeks apart. The number depends on the concern and the settings used.
Will it remove acne scars completely?
It improves them. Complete removal is not a realistic expectation, and combination treatment often gives a better result than laser alone.
How much downtime is there?
Several days of redness and flaking for ablative treatment, less for non-ablative. Plan around it.
When will I see results?
Texture improves over the course, and collagen remodelling continues for months afterwards.
Can I have it in summer?
It is possible with strict sun protection, but timing is discussed, since UV exposure during the course increases pigmentation risk.
