Fat Transfer
Fat taken from somewhere you would rather not have it, and placed where volume has been lost. Your own tissue, with the caveat that not all of it survives.

01 · Understanding the concern
Why patients consider this
Volume loss happens with age, weight change and after some surgery. Fillers address it temporarily; implants address it with a device. Fat transfer offers a third option using your own tissue, which integrates and is permanent for the portion that survives. The trade-off is predictability: graft take varies, and more than one session is sometimes needed.
02 · The procedure
What fat transfer involves
Fat is harvested by gentle liposuction from a donor area, processed to separate viable fat cells from fluid and oil, and injected in small aliquots through fine cannulas into the recipient area. Placing fat in small amounts across multiple planes gives each portion access to a blood supply, which is what determines survival.
03 · Candidacy
Who may be considered
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. Suitability is decided by examination.
- Adequate donor fat available
- Stable weight, since transferred fat behaves like fat elsewhere
- Realistic expectation that a proportion will be reabsorbed
- Willingness to consider a second session for further volume
- Non-smokers or able to stop as advised
What it can address
Concerns it is used for
- Facial volume loss in the cheeks and temples
- Contour irregularities after previous surgery
- Hand volume
- Body contour deficits
- Volume in combination with other procedures

04 · Planning
Why the planning matters more than the technique
Not all transferred fat survives, and honest planning accounts for that rather than promising it will. Over-correction to compensate has its own problems. Where a larger volume change is needed, a staged approach is usually more reliable than a single large session.
05 · How it works
Step by step
- 01
Donor selection
A donor area is chosen based on available fat and contour benefit.
- 02
Harvest
Fat is removed gently at low negative pressure to preserve cell viability.
- 03
Processing
The graft is prepared to remove fluid, blood and oil.
- 04
Placement
Fat is injected in small amounts across planes with fine cannulas.
- 05
Settling
Volume reduces over the first months as part of the graft resorbs.
- 06
Review
Assessment at months, with a second session planned if needed.
06 · The procedure journey
Before, during and after
Before
Weight should be stable. Instructions on medication and smoking apply as for any surgery.
During
Depending on volume and site, under local with sedation or general anaesthetic.
After
Swelling and bruising at both donor and recipient sites, with the recipient area looking fuller than the final result.
07 · Recovery
What recovery generally involves
Donor sites behave like small-volume liposuction, with compression and bruising. Recipient areas are swollen initially. Pressure on grafted areas is avoided during the early period, since it affects survival. Most people resume desk work within a week; final volume is assessed at months.
Recovery times are general ranges. Your own timeline depends on the extent of treatment, your health and your work, and is given at consultation.
- Avoid pressure or massage on grafted areas as instructed
- Wear compression on the donor area as advised
- Maintain a stable weight while the graft settles
- Do not judge volume in the first weeks
- Attend the review where a second session is assessed
08 · Outcomes
What to expect from the result
The surviving portion of the graft is permanent and behaves like the fat it came from, growing and shrinking with weight. The proportion that survives varies between individuals and sites, and cannot be guaranteed.
09 · Safety
Risks and considerations
Risks include partial graft resorption, irregularity or lumpiness, fat necrosis, cyst formation, infection and donor-site contour change. Facial fat transfer requires particular care around vascular anatomy. All are discussed at consultation.
No procedure is risk-free. A full, individual discussion of risk forms part of consent and takes place before any decision is made.
10 · The surgeon
Why Dr. Swikriti Raniwala
The surgeon who assesses you performs the procedure and reviews you afterwards. Surgical work takes place in accredited surgical facilities with board-certified anaesthesiologists, and you leave the consultation with the plan and the costs in writing.

Questions patients ask
Fat Transfer: common questions
How much fat survives?
A proportion resorbs in the first months and the rest generally persists. The proportion varies by site and individual, which is why a second session is sometimes planned.
Is fat transfer better than fillers?
Different, not better. Fat is your own tissue and the surviving portion is durable; fillers are off-the-shelf, adjustable and temporary.
Will weight loss affect the result?
Yes. Transferred fat behaves like the fat it came from, so significant weight change alters the result.
Can it be done with other procedures?
Frequently. Fat is often harvested during liposuction and used in the same operation.
How long is the swelling?
Recipient-area swelling settles over weeks; final volume is generally assessed at several months.
Is a second session common?
It is planned openly where more volume is wanted after the first has settled.
