Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)
For upper arm skin that hangs after weight loss. Liposuction alone will not fix it, and the operation that will leaves a scar along the inner arm.

01 · Understanding the concern
Why patients consider this
Significant weight loss frequently leaves loose skin on the upper arms that no amount of training addresses. It affects sleeve fit and, for many people, whether they wear short sleeves at all. The distinction that matters at consultation is whether the arm is heavy with fat, loose with skin, or both, because the treatment differs completely.
02 · The procedure
What arm lift (brachioplasty) involves
Brachioplasty removes a wedge of excess skin and fat from the inner upper arm and closes the wound along the inner aspect, where the scar is least visible in normal positions. Where fat is the dominant issue and skin quality is good, liposuction alone may be appropriate with no scar of consequence. Where both are present, they are combined.
03 · Candidacy
Who may be considered
This is general guidance rather than a diagnosis. Suitability is decided by examination.
- Loose upper arm skin after weight loss or with age
- Weight stable for a reasonable period
- Acceptance of a long inner-arm scar as the trade-off
- Non-smokers or able to stop as advised
- Medically fit for anaesthesia
What it can address
Concerns it is used for
- Hanging skin on the upper arm
- Arm circumference where fat contributes
- Skin laxity extending toward the axilla

04 · Planning
Why the planning matters more than the technique
The scar runs along the inner arm and is long. It is generally not visible with arms down but is visible with arms raised. Patients who are not comfortable with that trade-off are better served by liposuction alone, accepting a smaller change, and that choice is discussed openly.
05 · How it works
Step by step
- 01
Assessment
Pinch test and examination to determine skin versus fat contribution.
- 02
Marking
Excision pattern marked with the arm positioned to plan scar placement.
- 03
Liposuction
Where fat is a component, it is treated first.
- 04
Skin excision
The marked wedge of skin is removed.
- 05
Closure
Layered closure along the inner arm, with attention to tension.
- 06
Compression
Garment fitted and reviews scheduled.
06 · The procedure journey
Before, during and after
Before
Weight stability, investigations, anaesthetic assessment and stopping smoking as advised.
During
General anaesthetic, commonly a day case or one night depending on extent.
After
Swelling, bruising and a compression garment. Arm movement is restricted initially.
07 · Recovery
What recovery generally involves
Desk work is commonly resumed within one to two weeks. Lifting and upper-body training are restricted for several weeks. Swelling settles over months. The scar goes through a red, firm phase before maturing over a year or more.
Recovery times are general ranges. Your own timeline depends on the extent of treatment, your health and your work, and is given at consultation.
- Wear the compression sleeve as instructed
- No lifting or upper-body training until cleared
- Avoid sun on the healing scar
- Begin scar care only once cleared
- Expect the scar to look worse before it looks better
08 · Outcomes
What to expect from the result
A firmer arm contour with a permanent inner-arm scar. Weight change affects the result. Outcomes vary and are not guaranteed.
09 · Safety
Risks and considerations
Risks include wound healing problems, scar widening or hypertrophy, seroma, altered sensation, and rarely lymphatic disturbance. Scar quality is the most common source of dissatisfaction, which is why expectations are set explicitly beforehand.
No procedure is risk-free. A full, individual discussion of risk forms part of consent and takes place before any decision is made.
10 · The surgeon
Why Dr. Swikriti Raniwala
The surgeon who assesses you performs the procedure and reviews you afterwards. Surgical work takes place in accredited surgical facilities with board-certified anaesthesiologists, and you leave the consultation with the plan and the costs in writing.

Questions patients ask
Arm Lift (Brachioplasty): common questions
Can liposuction alone fix my arms?
Only if skin quality is good and fat is the main issue. Where skin is loose, liposuction alone can make it look worse.
How visible is the scar?
It runs along the inner arm, generally hidden with arms down and visible with arms raised. Length depends on how much skin is removed.
How long before I can lift weights?
Upper-body training is restricted for several weeks; exact timing is given in your aftercare.
Will the skin sag again?
Significant weight change or ageing can cause further laxity over time.
Can it be combined with other procedures?
Often yes, particularly after major weight loss. Total operating time governs what is sensible.
Does it help with arm fat or arm skin?
Brachioplasty is a skin operation. Fat is addressed with liposuction, frequently in the same procedure.
